My name is Yuriko Chavez and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Born and raised in Southern California, I have an immense passion for studying history. My current major is Chican@ Studies, but I also enjoy literature classes, and writing both academically and artistically.
As a recipient of both Romero Scholarship for Excellence in Spoken Word and one of eight national Poets of the Year by the National English Honor Society, I have extensive experience in writing creatively.
Furthermore, I have served as a reporter for the Daily Nexus’s News team since August 2020, and was previously an Editor-in-Chief for my high school’s yearbook.
I am also a proud Engaging Humanities Fellow which is a program exclusively at UCSB that offers a variety of interdisciplinary classes. The courses are innovative and challenging, ensuring that their fellows think critically and create positive change within the world.
My desire is to pose questions about how our past shapes our future and role of agency that we hold in our life times, and I feel that a career in journalism can aid me in achieving this goal.
